Dance Technique Class Syllabus

Contemporary Flow, Barre & Alignment

In contemporary dance training, we begin by exploring the basics of movement, where movements begin – breath, fall and recovery.

Here, we focus on natural flow of movements, through the mechanics of the body, working with gravity, and applying alignment techniques and principles for students to not only develop the movement vocabulary of dance aesthetics, but also the best practices for sustainable dance practices, injury prevention, and physical well-being.

  1. Warm up – All students will be taught a sequence to stretch and warm up the whole body. Senior students will do warm up at their own time before class.

  2. Technique – Students will be guided through technique and conditioning exercises for the day. Exercises may range from contemporary flow/primal flow, barre, core strength training, alignment adjustments, or deep stretch and rehabilitation exercises as necessary and based on their level.

  3. Improvisation – Students will practice and apply the techniques taught through improvisation to be able to integrate the lessons into their natural movement vocabularies.
  • Contemporary Primal Flow Level 1

Introduction to contemporary dance flow where we practice the basics of primal movements, drawing from natural ways of moving from young children and animals.

This practice helps reset the body and mind towards a more natural and relaxed way of being, to set the foundation for the body into a more efficient use of effort, and to get students used to the changing of levels – from low level floor movements to up. It also opens up a whole range of movement of floor work, typical of contemporary dance for new students.

  • Contemporary & Barre Level 2

Students will further refine their flow of movements, improving alignment through the movement exercises, and learn basic footwork for dance, as a foundation for more complex extensions and footwork.

Here they will also learn basic arm positions for better spatial awareness for arm movements.

  • Contemporary & Barre Level 3

Students will be introduced to more demanding and varies flow exercises, increasing in speed and changing of planes,  to allow for more dynamic movements.

They will also learn basic leg extensions, and integrate arm movements with footwork.

  • Contemporary Flow Level 4

Applying basics of flow and footwork, students will further learn more dynamic movements such as more complex turns, jumps and floor rolls, while developing better body and spatial awareness, coordination, alignment, flexiblity and core strength.

  • Contemporary Flow Level 5

Further refinement and application of flow technique, extensions, turns, jumps, complex change of levels and directions.

  • Contemporary Choreography Level 6

This prepares students for more performative and expressive techniques, applying various energy and time dynamics to their technique through  choreography practice.

Students are encouraged to also take the Creative Classes or Expressive Dance class to understand and apply the various creative and improvisational techniques in performances.

  • Contemporary Choreography Level 7
Applying more complex dynamics for expression and storytelling through group choreography, including  the use of props and partner work/lifts. It is encouraged that students supplement their skills with Contact Improvisation/Partnering Dance and Props Dance classes to practice the basics of partnering work.
