Your Movement, Your Journey: Discover Movement at Soul Dance Space
Jennifer’s Story
As a child; Jennifer was a natural mover, performer, and teacher. She found pure joy in sharing her singing and dancing for family and friends, and everyone. As an aside, Jennifer had always enjoyed teaching her peers from a young age too.
As she grew into a teenager, with the stresses of school and life, Jennifer craved movement to release that energy. But back in the 90s, dance options were limited to classical Ballet or hip-hop, which was not quite what she was looking for. Her love for action movies led her to explore martial arts like Taekwondo, and she even trained herself in gymnastics. While she gained some skills, these practices led to injuries, including chronic lower back pain and torn hamstrings. By university, her body felt tired, and she took a break from intense physical training.
The Inner Calling to Dance & Wellness
Yet, her true nature, that of a dancer and mover, could not be silenced. Soon after starting her first job, Jennifer felt a powerful inner pull, an undeniable call to return to dance. This led her to search for a new teacher, and she eventually found a contemporary dance class that felt right – a place where she could explore and combine different styles.
With the skilled and experienced guidance of her teacher, Jennifer discovered something truly life-changing. Incorporated healing principles into her improvisation and techniques, and Jennifer realized that these movements didn’t just rebuild her body from old injuries; they brought immense freedom and restoration to her heart and mind. She saw the huge potential for people of all ages and abilities to express themselves through movement. This insight proved invaluable when Jennifer started teaching Creative Dance in for International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) and Primary Years Program (PYP) syllabus full time as an international school teacher from 2009-2012, tailoring the teaching methods to suit various skill levels and styles.
In 2016, her journey brought her to into getting certified as a teacher in Yin Yoga and Hatha Yoga.
Through her journey, Jennifer had applied various somatic practices, healing modalities and mindfulness meditation to heal her own traumas and find release in her body and mind.
The Soul Dance Space Philosophy: Move, Heal, Be
This personal healing journey became the very heart of Jennifer’s teaching philosophy. She believes learning dance can be a powerful gateway both for children’s mental and physical development, and for adults, a profound tool for self-reflection and self-healing.
Ultimately, Soul Dance Space was created to fill a gap: to blend the art and technique of contemporary dance with a strong focus on mindful self-awareness and healing. Here, the practice – Soul Dance – aims to help you:
- Balance technical skill with genuine self-expression.
- Dig deeper into your consciousness to better understand yourself.
- Uncover what holds back your self-expression.
- Learn to move naturally, letting go of old habits that may be less than optimal or even harmful to your body.
- Find a path to becoming a better version of yourself through self-compassion and ambition.
At Soul Dance Space, Jennifer’s method isn’t about “learning to dance” as a mere activity. It’s about simply being. It’s about unlearning rigid ideas of what dance or a body “should” look like, and instead, discovering how to move in ways that keep your body healthy, vital, and mobile for as long as possible.
